2021 – ELEPHANT – 1 OZ BIG FIVE SERIES II (1.)

With the release of the Big Five II Series, the South African Mint continues the success story of a coveted classic. Once again, the Series includes a total of five coins, all dedicated to South Africa’s impressive wildlife. The animals known as the “Big Five” – Elephant – Lion – Buffalo – Rhino – Leopard – are considered emblems and ambassadors of this culturally rich country and represent the African fauna. The motive of the platinum coin features the impressive portrait of an elephant. Also included in the design are the inscriptions “SOUTH AFRICA”, “BIG FIVE 2021” and South Africa’s national coat of arms. The reverse features two halves of an elephant head. When two of the coins are placed next to each other, a complete close-up portrait of an elephant is visible. By placing many of these coins next to each other, a whole herd of elephants appears. The mintage of this rare Elephant platinum proof coin is limited to only 500 pieces worldwide. The African elephant (Loxodonta africana) is probably the largest and most impressive representative of the African animal world, which generally stands for power and strength. The “gentle giant” is characterized by its excellent memory and a very pronounced social behavior. In the wild, the elephant can live up to 60 years – but to this day the threat from poachers remains great. The strictly limited Big Five II Elephant platinum coin is delivered in the original wooden box including a numbered certificate of authenticity from the South African Mint.
