The new series by the South African Mint is titled The Odyssey and explores a metaphorical journey. The series begins with the “Odyssey of the Sky”, represented by the Bateleur Eagle. Struck from one ounce of 99.9% silver in proof quality, the coin features a highly detailed depiction of a Bateleur eagle in flight. The design is completed with fine ornaments, the inscription “THE ODYSSEY – BATELEUR EAGLE”, the denomination “R5”, as well as weight and fineness details. The reverse shows the South African coat of arms and echoes the ornamental design. The lower edge of the coin bears the engraving “2025 – SOUTH AFRICA”.
The Bateleur Eagle (Terathopius ecaudatus) is a striking bird of prey native to the African savannah. Its name means “tightrope walker” and refers to its distinctive, rocking flight pattern. With a wingspan of up to 1.9 m, a vivid red face and barely visible tail, it is easily recognizable. The Bateleur eagle is a diurnal hunter and scavenger, covering hundreds of kilometers each day. It forms lifelong pair bonds and typically raises just one chick per year. Its population is in decline, mainly due to habitat loss, poisoning, and human disturbances. In 2024, it was named “Bird of the Year” in South Africa to raise awareness of its conservation needs. In many cultures, it is seen as a symbol of courage and freedom.
